Hospitality Mutual Insurance Company was founded as the Liquor Liability Joint Underwriting Association of Massachusetts (LLJUA) in 1985.
The Massachusetts Legislature created LLJUA to guarantee the availability of liquor liability insurance to any licensee or any person lawfully engaged in serving alcoholic beverages. LLJUA succeeded in serving that market, issuing 30,000 policies with total premiums approaching one hundred million dollars. Recognizing the greater benefit that could be provided if insurance from LLJUA were available to all businesses in the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts Legislature approved the conversion of LLJUA to Hospitality Mutual in June 2008.
As a private, mutually owned insurance company, Hospitality Mutual has the ability to provide not only liquor liability insurance, but commercial general liability coverage to businesses throughout Massachusetts. It may also expand into other states, although there are no immediate plans to do so.
The creation of Hospitality Mutual will benefit all businesses seeking liquor liability coverage, including bars, restaurants, social clubs, package stores and caterers. In many cases, LLJUA’s policyholders had to piece together full coverage using a number of insurers. They now have a domestic insurance company that understands their market and can serve their needs, so they will no longer have to rely on out of state carriers for a portion of their coverage.
It will also benefit the Commonwealth, as premiums will stay within the state and new jobs will be created.
